According to the most recent data from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir retained its No.1 status on the evening newscast, winning the week of December 13 in average total viewers (8.16 million) and among adults aged 25 to 54 (1.41 million).
ABC World News Tonight has now beaten both its NBC and CBS competitions 159 of the last 160 weeks among average total viewers, and 88 of the last 90 weeks among adults aged 25 to 54. It was also the second most-watched show on television last week, excluding sports and syndication.
That said, the newscast lost -3% of total viewers and -9% among adults aged 25 to 54 compared to the previous week (December 6). Compared to the same week in 2020, the trend was even worse, with World News Tonight losing a double-digit percentage of the average total audience (-16%) and among adults aged 25 to 54 (-23%) .
On NBC, Nightly News featuring Lester holt came in second for the week of December 13, both by total viewership (7.49 million) and among adults aged 25 to 54 (1.25 million). Compared to the previous week, NBC’s evening newscast gained + 2% of total viewers but lost -5% among adults aged 25 to 54. Compared to the same week in 2020, news shows fell by -6% in total viewers and -19% among adults aged 25 to 54.
NBC Nightly News managed to finish No.1 on Monday across the board. It’s a remarkable feat, and was helped by the fact that the 6:30 p.m. PT edition of World News Tonight was preempted in West Coast markets by ABC’s live broadcast of Monday Night Football.
Nightly News has consistently been able to achieve its narrowest total viewership gap to World News Tonight since the week of March 16, 2020 (excluding Nightly’s victory for Thanksgiving week), falling by 674,000 average viewers below ABC for the week of December 13. NBC’s evening newscast has indeed gained ground over rival ABC in recent months (in total viewership) compared to the first quarter of this year, falling far behind World News Tonight when it comes to ” attract adults aged 25 to 54.
In addition, on YouTube, full episodes of Nightly News on weekdays averaged 600,000 and nearly 500,000 viewers last week. This is according to data from Adobe Analytics and partner portals; YouTube analytics portal.
The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell an average of 5.09 million total viewers and 850,000 adults aged 25 to 54 for the week of December 13. This represents -3% of the total number of viewers and -4% of adult viewers aged 25 to 54 compared to the average of the newscast of the previous week. Additionally, like ABC and NBC, CBS saw year-over-year losses in total viewers (-14%) and adults aged 25 to 54 (-22%).
