Another week gave the same result in the race for evening news ratings. ABC World News tonight with David Muir was the No. 1 evening newscast for the week of January 11, 2021 in the categories concerned: Total viewers (10.34 million on average) and adults 25-54 (2 million on average).
This marks 112 straight weeks that ABC’s evening newscast has averaged a larger total audience than its NBC and CBS evening competitions.
In fact, the 10.34 million average for the week (according to live Nielsen data on the same day) represents ABC’s largest average audience since the week of April 27, 2020.
News of the world tonight is see its most-watched season in 17 years and the best performance for adults aged 25 to 54 in 3 years, since the 2003-2004 and 2017-2018 seasons, respectively.
NBC Nightly News featuring Lester holt averaging nearly 8.5 million viewers in total, making it the # 3 most watched show of the week across television (excluding sports and syndication). The news also covered an average of 1.7 million adults aged 25 to 54.
Unlike ABC’s and CBS’s evening news broadcasts, NBC’s flagship newscast also streams live on YouTube and can thus attract additional eyes (eyeballs that are not measured by Nielsen). According to the YouTube Analytics portal. Newscast grossed around 2 million per episode last week, with 30-40% of those viewers watching on their TVs through the YouTube app and the average listening time is around 12 minutes.
The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell averaged nearly 6.3 million viewers in total, including 1.2 million in the demo for adults 25-54 years old.
CBS Evening News was renamed Thursday due to a special report from CBS News, and its Thursday TV broadcast is excluded from weekly and seasonal averages. Evening News ranked as the most viewed show on CBS for each of the nights it was rated last week, and Monday, Tuesday and Friday in the A25-54 demo.
Compared to the previous week, which featured the national terrorist attack on the United States Capitol, World News Tonight was actually up + 2% in total viewership, but -3% in adults from 25 to 54 years old. NBC Nightly News made up -1% of total viewers and -3% among adults aged 25 to 54. After a huge week by its own standards, CBS Evening News has returned to earth with -9% of total viewers and -20% among adults aged 25 to 54.
Why the losses from week to week? Coverage of the horrific event likely attracted younger viewers who traditionally did not watch the evening news. With that in mind, it makes sense to see a bigger drop in demo viewers last week than in total viewers.
From one year to the next, the trend remains strong. World News Tonight is up + 11% in total viewers and + 10% among adults aged 25 to 54. NBC Nightly News represents + 5% of the total number of viewers and + 4% among adults aged 25 to 54. CBS Evening News + 6% in total viewers and + 11% in adults 25-54.
